Strickoff's Jewish Bakery near Waldbaums, Baldwin Modern where Dad bowled with Baldwin Businessmen's League, and Hal's Stationery on Church. Yes, Nick's Café at Bonaparte/Milburn where my old friend's Mom drank daily, Danny Fortune.

Instead of a Mac Attack, you just had to have a Nikki burger or a Texas Ranger Special. You used to go into the rock and roll club called "some place else" to hear the Keytones. YOu were forced to swallow a raw egg before school in order to try and get into the AOT fraternity. YOu went sledding in the winter at the golf course, now the high school. You partied at the Baldwin Manor in 1968 when you were only 17 yrs old ( legal age was only 18). You used to make out at Silver Lake. (from Paul Orofino, owner of the Baldwin Manor 1968-1972.

- The milk machine at the gas station (.25 for a quart -- mom said, 'highway robbery!')
- Seeing the 'tough kids' hanging out at Tramer's Deli by Saint Christopher's
- Having to walk just under three miles to BHS because we missed the school bus by one block
- Going to school with nearly all the same kids in one class from K-6

Visiting the blog for the first time. I grew up in Baldwin in the 40's and 50's and was in the last graduating class from the old h.s. (1957) My family moved away in 1959 after I was already in college, so I had no contact with Baldwin until 2007 when I was tracked down by a classmate to attend our 50th reunion. My nostalgic impulses kindled an effort to both remember the past and find out what Baldwin has become. I've been in two Baldwin-oriented FB groups for a couple years now.

What I have realized is that: a.) my time frame is the immediate post WW2 period when change started happening quite rapidly but before the new h.s. opened; b.) my geographical part of Baldwin was limited to north of Demott Ave. the Grand Ave. corridor to Merrick Rd and the Baldwin theatre (never called cinemas in those days.) c.) with the exception of teachers and notable community members - the people I remember are my classmates and a few friends within a couple years of my own age.

It's fun remembering the good old days!!!

I'll try again. I said I'm probably the oldest BHS graduate (Baldwin High School Class of 1948). After college my jobs took me to other states. I did come back to visit some years ago, and it was fun. Since I discovered this blog I've enjoyed the remembrance, but I'll admit that so many pertain to Baldwon stuff after I left town.

- You caddied at the golf course where the high school is now.
- You cut across the golf course to get to Coolidge Elementary School.
- There was no separate junior high building; 7th grade was in ES buildings; 8th grade was in the HS building.
- There was a candy store and Famularo's grocery store across from Coolidge ES.

Spence Coleman said...

In the 1930s there was an abandoned tennis court near the intersection of Grand Avenue and St. Lukes Place. In the winter someone would flood the court, which would freeze into a skating rink. They sold hot chocolate. A cup would cost a nickel if they made it with water. It was a dime if you wanted it made with milk.

When I was just a kid in the late 1930s, during the Great Depression, when many people were out of work, the Baldwin Theater let us in for free. The admission price was a can of food, because many people couldn't afford to buy even that.

Spence Coleman said...

Here's another memory from the Great Depression years. In September 1935, on my first day of Kindergarten at Coolidge Elementary School (no longer there), I noticed a bushel basket of apples in the corner. The teacher said we could each take an apple or two when we went home. Great, I thought. Free apples. How about that. Years later, when I learned what was going on in the country, I figured out that the farmers couldn't sell their apples to people who had little or no money, so they gave them to the schools rather than plow them under. What had seemed like a happy occasion was actually a really sad one.

Remember playing in Coes Neck before there was a park, and just a scruffy old ball field. At one time, there had been a cinder block factory near the street, and on weekends, we'd climb up the conveyor belt, and jump off into the nearby piles of sand.

The Good Rats played regularly at the Baldwin Manor. Mickey Marcello would strum his baseball bat while singing.

Watching Star Trek at the Baldwin Manor on Sundays, sitting at the penny-covered bar drinking $0.25 bottles of Bud.

Playing touch football for Peach's Pub on Sundays, and spending the rest of the day there. When my parents asked me if I went to church, I'd tell them that Father Gilroy said the Mass. Jimmy Gilroy was the bartender.

ah beautiful Baldwin. Graduated BHS 1968 and went upstate to work at a resort/horse ranch...that was an amazing time! Really remember the Baldwin Manor with such fondness. Used to get in @ 16 with fake i.d. Don't know how the guys never figured it out since I looked like I was 13. What an absolute blast. And oh yeah, the Jones Beach bus ride from Freeport train station. We lived in an amazing time, didn't we? Moved to the West coast in '71 but will always remember my Baldwin.

Unknown said...

Also forgot to mention the Pink Canary sodafountain and toys/gifts on Grand Avenue....that place was a treasure for us kids, along with the original 5 and 10 store and Mrs Powers candy store. And our family lived across the street from the Famularos...what a great bunch of people they were...always had fun with their kids building forts, etc. This 72 yo girl always had a crush on Peter but it was not meant to be. Had to travel across the country to find my own Italian boy!

Stumbled onto this site while trying to remember Carlucci's. It was our go-to pizza place but the name escaped me so I started Googling.

Moved to Baldwin in 1972 when my Dad retired from the Air Force. It was a strange experience for me because schools in the military were fully integrated. When I got to BHS I think there was one single black student in the entire school and Freeport HS was almost the opposite racial mix.

Worked at Herbert Roberts Lithographers on the corner of Gand Ave and Merrick Pkwy as part of the BOCES program. I left town when I graduated BHS in '74 (Class of Dee Snyder) so I'm sure things have changed a lot.

Walked to school from our apartments at Kings Pkwy and Grand Ave and would get a fried egg on a roll with a Yoo-Hoo at John's Deli almost every morning for breakfast. His brother Carl worked there with them. Their meatball hero was great too!

Personally re-opened that fence hole short-cut to school behind the Food Fair twice during my time there because it saved a much longer walk coming from my side of town. Don't know why they wouldn't put a gate in.

Lunched at Woolworth's with desert at Carvel (either a Flying Saucer or Chocolate sundae). Since then, I have found Carvel in the St Louis Airport and Palm Harbor, Fl. (Both closed now)

My cousin grew up in Baldwin and knew the same kids from K-HS. Occassionally one would get held back a year but they all grew up and play sports together. Stick-ball, stoop-ball, street hockey, baseball.

We would ride the bus to Nassau Coliseum for Islander games (back when they were terrible) and you could sit anywhere in the place because attendance was really low. Same with riding the South Shore LIRR in to see the Mets at Shea Stadium.

Bought clothes at Deurk Brothers. Went to the Sunrise Drive-In and the movies theater next to Carlucci's. Bought my first 10-speed bike from the shop in that same strip mall.

In the unlikely event that Al Zamperelli or Harry Grossman stumble in here, Willie says Hi!

Unknown said...

Oh, I forgot this. Someone on the blog mentioned going to bars with fake ID.

In BOCES a few of us printed fake Draft cards (Selective Service System Status Card or SSS Form 7). They worked great because when you were 18 you were required to register for the military draft for Vietnam. The drinking age was 18 then so nobody questioned us.

The best part was there were no photographs as part of the card. Only type written information, two signatures, and a stamp, all of which were very easy to fake. It was some extra spending money for us until one guy forgot to clean off the rubber blanket of the printing press.

Our teacher, Mr. Schmidt raised H-E-double-hockey-sticks with all of us and we terminated that enterprise.
